The Mexican Free-Tail Bat is more common in southern portions of the state. Like the Little Brown Bat, it has a wingspan of about 8 inches, and weighs in at half an ounce. These bats will form huge colonies, up to several million members in some cases. They mate in the fall, but delay fertilization, and one pup is born in early June, and can fly about eight weeks later.
The Big Brown Bat is also common in the area. The Big Brown Bat has a larger wingspan around 13 inches and can live up to 19 years in the wild. They mate in October, before winter hibernation, and after a delayed fertilization and a 60-day gestation, give birth to one or two baby bats in early June.
The Little Brown Bat which is one of the most common species in the area. The Little Brown Bat is small, with a wingspan of about 8 inches, and typically weighs in at less than half an ounce. They often roost in buildings along roofline coping, in attics, chimney voids, under roof tiles or barns. Young are born in June and can fly by August. They can live up to 30 years apparently, though average lifespan in the wild may be about 7 years.
All these bats often roost in man-made buildings and love the attics of homes. None of these animals are blind, but they do use echolocation in order to aid in navigation on the wing. They are all insectivorous and can eat up to 3000 mosquitoes per night. Large colonies of bats can not only be noisy and unsettling around dusk and dawn, as swarms of bats fly in and out, they can cause considerable health concerns as they leave their droppings and urine behind. The larger the colony, the greater the concern. Not only can the droppings (guano) and urine corrode building materials, but large accumulations of droppings can create the potential for ceilings to collapse. Not only does the bat guano have a pungent odor, but it can harbor fungal spores that potentially lead to the lung disease Histoplasmosis. The other large concern would be potential exposure and transmission of Rabies. Most cases of rabies locally, occur in bats.
